WILL OF NATHAN HAMMOND (1761 - 1814)

In the Name of God Amen.

I Nathan Hammond of Gloucester now Residing in Coventry in the County of Kent and State of Rhode Island & Yeoman being Infirm in Body but of a Sound Mind and Memory and Calling to mind the Mortality of my Body and that it is appointed to all men once to die; I do make and Ordain this my last Will and Testament that is to Say Principally and first of all I Recommend my Soul first to God who gave it and my Body to the Earth to be Buried in a Deceant and Christian Manner at the Disposition of my Friends; and as touching Such Worldly Estate as I may Die Possessed of I give and Dispose of in the following manner and form Vis.

Imprimus. I Give unto Each of my two daughters Ruth Thomas and Sarah Ann Pray, one Dollar which together with what I have heretofore given them is to be in full of the Portion of Property which I now intend for them.

Item. I Give and Bequeath unto my five sons Viz. George Hammond David C. Hammond Jonathon A. Hammond Asa D. Hammond Theodore Dwight Foster Hammond (except what may hereafter be given to my Affectionate Wife and Children) all my Real Estate Consisting of three Different Lotts and Parcels of Land Two Dwelling Houses Barn and Corn Cribb Lying and Being in the Towns of Foster and Gloucester and whatever other Appurtenances may be thereon Contained to them their Heirs and Assigns forever to Equally Divide Between or Among them after my other Affectionate Children have been Brought up and Educated from the Profits ensuing from the Same (Excepting that my Daughter Mehitabel Young is to have the Deficiency in her Portion of household goods made up to be Equal in Vallue with the before mentioned Daughters, and my Will is that my daughter Elizabeth be Allowed a Bedroom in and Fireplace known by the name of the middle Bedroom together with Sufficient Firewood for one Fire unless she should marry and in that Case to have a portion Equal to her other Sisters and I do further Order that my Executors do Pay my two Brothers Gideon & Amos Hammond the Portion or Legacy which was to be given them out of my Father Amos Hammonds Estate and that these Legacies be proportioned the Expense Equally among my five Sons as above mentioned.

Item. I give unto my other two Daughters Hannah B. Hammon & Esther C. Hammon as much of the Profits arising from the aforesaid Real Estate as may Educate and Bring them up through their Childhood and my Will and Desire is that they Should have as much and as good a Portion of Clothing and Household goods as my other Daughters have by this my Last Will and Testament - - Which portions or Legacies are to Come out of the aforesaid Real Estate which is given to all my sons which Portion of Each Daughter is to Come Due when they Each one become Eighteen Years of Age or Sooner if they marry Sooner.

Lastly. I do herein appoint my Affectionate Wife Olive Hammond and my Affectionate Son George Hammon Executrix and Executor to this my Last Will and Testament Ratifying and confirming this and no other as Such - - and all my Estate not given away if Any Such is to be given and divided in the Same proportion as is given in the Aforesaid. Excepting Twenty Dollars which hereby order to be given to my affectionate Granddaughter Amey Ann Hammond (alias) Phillips to become Due when She Becomes Eighteen Years of Age to be and Reamain to them their Heirs and Assigns forever.
