People get on the Internet for many reasons: to gather information, to
shop or simply for entertainment. But one of the oldest uses and most
common uses of the Internet is for communication - the most basic form
of which is through email. With the speed that obliterates all forms of
"snail mail", from the Pony Express to Express Air Mail, the use of Internet
mail , or email, has become a basic form of communication in today's world.
Some people even get Internet access simply for the use of email. So,
with such wide proliferation and reliance on email, we here at ARQ thought
that we should give a few pointers to make certain that your email client
settings and messaging practices were all up to speed. Let us begin with your email client - that is the program that you use to read, compose and send your email messages. Most of our clients use either Outlook Express or Outlook 97/2000 while some of our clients that use an older version of Internet Explorer, may simply use the Windows 95 based, Internet Mail program. However, users who choose Netscape over Internet Explorer, like most Macintosh users, more than likely use Netscape Mail for their email messaging needs. In addition, there are a very few users who use a third-party program called Eudora for their email needs. All of these programs work basically the same way, the basic differences being in the user interface. The all need the same information to send and retrieve information to and from our email servers. These basic pieces of email information are: Type of Server - This will be set as either POP3 or IMAP. Either will work on our servers. The industry standard and the one that I personally recommend is POP3. · Email Server Names - Anywhere you need to input an email server name, whether it be for your Incoming Mail Server (POP3 or IMAP), or for your Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), you need to put in the value: mail.arq.net · Email Address - If you are setting up an ARQ email account, your email address will be your_username@arq.net . · UserName - This is simply your username. Sometimes it is referred to as your logon name, account name or screen name. They all mean the same thing. The important matter to remember here is that you do not add the "@arq.net" to your username when you are suppose to supply just your username. Password - Simply supply your password. It is important to remember that all ARQ passwords are case-sensitive and that we require most passwords to be all lower-case. Also note that most programs will replace your password with all *'s for security reasons. At this point, you may be asking yourself, "Now that I have all the information required to configure my email client, where do I put it?" Well, as I mentioned earlier. There are many different email clients that you may be using and where you configure each client depends on which client you are using. Let us start with users that are still using IE3.0 and are stuck with using Internet Mail. First let me recommend that you upgrade your browser to at least IE5.0 - this will include Outlook Express - both programs will be a marked improvement over IE3.0 and Internet mail. You can download the latest version of Internet Explorer at www.microsoft.com/downloads. Also, within the next couple months, you will be able to download a customized version of IE6.0 at www.arq.net/software. But in the meantime, if you want to struggle along with Internet Mail and IE3.0, here is where you configure your email. Windows 95, Internet Mail, IE 3.0 Configuration 1. Open Internet Mail by clicking the Start button, then go up to Programs, then click on Internet Mail. 2. Select Mail from the top of the Internet Mail window, then go down and select Options. 3. Along the top, select the Server tab (see previous page for Illustration) 4. Input the proper information into the correct fields. 5. Click OK. Voila!
Next, let us acknowledge the most popular email client of our users, Outlook Express. Outlook Express, IE 4.0, 5.x Configuration 1. Open Outlook Express by clicking the Start button, then go up to Programs, then click Internet Explorer, then finally select Outlook Express. 2. Select the drop-down menu, Tools, then select the Accounts option. 3. If there is an ARQ mail account in there, select it then press the Properties button. (If there is no ARQ account, you will need to configure one by selecting Add then Mail - follow the wizard from there.) 4. Select the General tab from the top: 5. Input the proper configuration settings. 6. Select the Servers tab. 7. Input the appropriate configuration settings.
8. Click OK. Voila! | ||||
