ABOUT AMOS HAMMOND (ca. 1735 - 1813)

Amos was the son of Gideon (1696 - 1754). Amos moved to the town of Scituate, RI in 1736 with his father. He married Mehitable Horton, daughter of John and Mary (Chase) Horton in Rehoboth on 6 APR 1756. Amos remained in the area of Scituate, Foster ( formed from Scituate) and Glocester, RI his entire life. Because there were three Amos Hammonds in the town of Scituate (Gideon's brother and nephew were also named Amos) there has been much confusion in published sources regarding the movements of these Amoses. (Gideon's brother Amos and nephew Amos moved to the area of Berkshire County, MA). In a deposition given in 1811 Amos stated that he was in his "seventy-sixth year" and had built the house where he lived 53 ago. Although Amos considered himself a resident of Foster all his life, a dispute over the boundary between the towns of Foster and Glocester caused Amos to become a resident of Glocester without moving. Amos' deposition was taken for use by the Town of Foster in resolving this dispute. For some unknown reason Amos was living in Coventry, RI at the time of his death.
